HAMMOND — When Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. sent his son Chase off to law school, he assumed like many college graduates he'd end up taking a job somewhere far from home. Instead, his son now works in a new office tower the mayor helped pave the way for nearly two decades ago.
HAMMOND — The city is set to host its final groundbreaking for the Oxbow Landing development located along an oxbow on the Little Calumet River.
The city of Hammond and ATG Real Estate Development will gather at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at 2911 Carlson Drive to break ground on the last parcel in the development.

Porter County, with its close proximity to Lake Michigan and public transportation for quick access to Chicago, is seeing a boom in real estate developments.
According to statistics released by GNIAR, Porter County’s year-to-date growth from Jan. 1, 2016 – Feb. 29, 2016 to Jan. 1, 2017 – Feb. 28, 2017, showed an increase in the number of units sold of 3.7 percent and an increase in the median selling price of units sold of 5.9 percent.

The Hammond Redevelopment Commission on Tuesday is expected to enter into an option agreement with ATG Real Estate Development LLC for the last parcel of land the commission has available at the development.

Construction work began last year on the 37,200-square-foot, three-story 2929 Carlson Drive building and ATG Real Estate Development is already planning to build at a second site at Oxbow Landing.
Vacancy rose slightly in the Northwest Indiana office market last year, after the Region's first new speculative office building in a decade went up in Hammond.
But rents have been rising and the vacancy rate is expected to fall this year, according to Commercial In-Sites' annual Class "A" office market report.

HAMMOND | A new multimillion dollar office building is expected to be constructed in Hammond's Gateways Redevelopment area at the same time as the city looks to expand the boundaries of an economic incentive zone.
The Hammond Redevelopment Commission on Tuesday approved a development agreement with ATG Real Estate Development LLC, of Hobart, which is proposing an approximately $5.5 million development project on a 3.5-acre site at Oxbow Landing near Interstate 80/94 and Kennedy Avenue.

HIGHLAND | A six building motel complex will be built on the long-vacant property that once housed the Terry Shaver Pontiac dealership.
The land at 2121 45th St., at the northwest corner of Prairie Avenue and 45th Street, was recently purchased by Prairie Square LLC.
The Shaver building, which has been empty for the past 10 years, already has been razed.
"The motel is expected to open in the late summer or fall of 2014," Prairie Square Principal Eric Gastevich said Friday afternoon through his attorney, Brent Torrenga.
